Gulf Comparative Education Society
The Third Annual Gulf Comparative Education Society Symposium
Global Innovation, Local Adaptation: Trends and Reactions
Crowne Plaza Hotel Bahrain, March 24-25, 2012
Overview
The 2012 symposium examined the use of global innovations in education in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries as well as the ways in which they are adapted (or not) to suit the needs of the environment. The symposium explored the ways in which educators, families and the community react when faced with a slew of imported innovations and why some innovations stick while others are left by the wayside.
The GCES Symposium 2012 was hosted by the Bahrain Teachers College, at the University of Bahrain, and sponsored by the Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research. The symposium was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Bahrain.
The Symposium brought together 50 speakers from across the GCC and abroad including David Guile, Institute of Education; Thuwayba Al Barwani, Sultan Qaboos University; Mark Bray, University of Hong Kong . It was attended by over 150 participants from the United States, United Kingdom, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. The Symposium ended with the announcement of the new GCES board as well as the venue for the 2013 symposium - Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.
